I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own.
How has that been working for you? I Imagine not so well, or you wouldn’t be looking here… Even the toughest people weren’t meant to always handle everything on their own. It can be exhausting to feel like you always have to be strong! In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to help you reduce your stress and live the life you deserve.
I know my child is really struggling, but he won’t talk to me about what’s going on. How will counseling be any different for him?
The brain development of children and teens, does not allow them to relate to emotion and have emotional conversations in the same way adults do. That is why it is so important to make sure you are entrusting the care of your child to someone who has specific training and experience in working with children. In order to be effective working with children, I leave my adult expectations at the door and meet them where they stand. My approach to child therapy encompasses a genuine love and appreciation for children that allows me to be a comforting and creative guide for their healing journey.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way, teach you new skills, help you gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential and unbiased. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing your business.”. In counseling, you can be fully open and honest and your are accepted exactly how you are, where you are.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
You’ve fallen and broken your leg and it hurts. ALOT! Taking a pain pill may provide you with some temporary relief but it will not mend your broken bone, the root cause of your pain. Medication for mental health is no different. It can be helpful to alleviate your symptoms but alone will not solve the issue. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing, expand on your strengths, and help you accomplish your personal goals.
How long will it take before I feel better?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
